To replace a missing tooth, the best way is with a dental implant. Your Dentist will determine if you are a candidate for a One Stage or a Two Stage Implant.
With a One Stage Implant , at the time of the implant placement surgery, a healing abutment is placed on the implant.
An abutment is a connector attached to the implant that protrudes through the gum tissues, as you can see in the graphic. After a 3 to 4 month healing period during which the implant integrates to the bone, a crown is finally placed on the implant.
One Stage implants are generally used when the patient’s bone quality is good, guaranteeing good initial implant stability.
They are also used when cosmetics are not a concern, such as the back areas of the mouth.
Under special conditions an implant can be inserted and a crown (or load) placed on top of it at the same time, hence the term Immediate Load also used for One Stage Implants. However, this is a very special circumstance requiring ideal conditions. It is generally safer and wiser not to subject an implant to biting forces until it is fully healed and integrated with the supporting bone.
